Overseeing the publishing programs for my properties is not merely about ensuring correct grammar, syntax, usage, flow, and second language incorporation when applicable. In addition to top-quality, age-appropriate writing, it's about ensuring overall property integrity and accuracy of storytelling - extending the world of the show through organic, relevant narrative. Whether adapting an episode or devising an original idea, the book's theme, action, and identity must stay true to brand while offering something new for the format. Examples? Glad you asked.
"The Magic Tree", 2025: The new Dora publishing line from Scholastic arrives 2025! I oversaw development of all titles, including this billingual 8x8 storybook, a Level 1 Reader, and an orginal storybook. While this book (art not final) adapts an episode, it required revisions to the title, plot, and treatment of language to create a satisfying bilnigual 8x8 experience. The line is maravillosa.
Dora's Book of Manners, 2001: Flashing back to the beginning of the franchise, in Dora's Book of Manners, we adapted an episode to award-worthy effect. It was the first book to adopt third-person narration, a recipe we repeated for special releases like "Dora's Fairy-tale Adventure," a classic Simon and Schuster title that won a Parents Choice Award.
World School Day Adventure, 2010: I worked with she-wolf Shakira on this exciting title about Dora helping the pop star bring laptops to schoolchildren around the world. This title began a relationship with Shakira, allowing us to feature her in an episode of the spinoff series, Dora and Friends.
Baking with Blue, 2022: For this Blue's Clues & You! original title, I pushed to leverage new host Josh's cultural background to teach kids, not just the joy of baking while playing Blue's Clues, but Filipino words and cuisine.
Sign with Blue, 2022: In this title, we decided to leverage something largely unspoken in the show: all the hosts always used American Sign Language to maximize inclusivity and reinforce key words. So we created an original book in which Josh and Blue teach sign language to preschoolers and parents!
Yellowstone Official Dutton Ranch Family Cookbook, 2024: For this New York Times bestseller, I worked with character and real show chef, Gator, to reframe his recipe book into the Dutton Family Cookbook, renaming recipes after characters and writing recipe intros to tie the dishes back to key show moments in Yellowstone and 1883. It was a recipe for success!
Yellowstone Bar Book, 2024: To expand on the success of the cookbook, not to mention our growing food and spirits line, I worked with accomplished mixologists to craft a cocktail book that introduces each recipe with a relevant iconic show moment from Yellowstone, 1883, and 1923. And yes, the drinks work!
Star Trek Games & Comics: I ran Star Trek game development like a publishing program, given the massive story-based manuals involved, such as in Captain's Chair, featuring varyied timelines, Star Trek Adventures, a D&D-style roleplaying game, and Murder Aboard the Titan-A, a mystery set in the Picard timeline. I also reviewed IDW comics, such as the hilarious Lower Decks line.
